it didn't come easy.
In a playoff matchup against top-ranked Florence, the Huskies battled through one of the toughest games of the season, needing double overtime and penalty kicks to get it done.
Florence came in as one of the best teams in the state, and the match played out exactly like you'd expect. Both teams traded chances and controlled stretches of play, with neither side giving an inch.
Brennan Greer scored first for the Huskies making it 1-0, but Florence answered in the first half to tie the game. By the end of regulation, it was still tied 1-1.
Overtime didn't settle anything either. Through two extra 5 minute periods, both defenses held strong and every possession felt like it could decide the game, but no one could find the breakthrough.
That set up penalty kicks.
Brennan Greer,
Andrew Bell, and
Steven Richards each converted their penalty kicks. Goalkeeper
Bryant Steele stopped three of Florence's five shots to seal the win.
With the pressure at its highest, Hewitt-Trussville stayed composed. The Huskies stepped up and delivered, knocking in their chances while coming up with key stops on the other end. When the final kick was blocked, the celebration was on, because Hewitt had taken down the No. 1 team in the state.
Now the Huskies move on to the Final Four, where they'll face Bob Jones on Wednesday, May 6 at 3:00 in Huntsville.
