Hewitt-Trussville Girls Basketball used a final second defensive stand to slip past Vestavia 49-47 on Friday night in the 7A Area 6 opener for both teams. The Huskies are now 17-3 overall on the season.
D'yona Jones hit 12 of 17 shots from the field and was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line to score a game-high 27 points. Jones also added four blocks and three rebounds.
April Hooks added eight points while
Jordan Hunter and Chris James scored four points each.
The Huskies led 15-12 after the first period and extended the lead to four points at halftime. The Rebels tied the game as the third quarter ended. The Huskies held a two point lead with 10 seconds left, but the Rebels had the final shot. The VH shot fell off the rim and Chris James secured the rebound and sealed the win.
The Huskies will remain in Region play when they host Spain Park on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6pm.
