Matthew Michalke

Coach Michalke has been teaching and coaching at Hewitt-Trussville since the Fall of 2010.  He served as Head Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field at HTMS until 2021. Over the past 14 years, Coach Michalke has coached over 1000 student-athletes. 

During his tenure at HTMS, the Boys Cross Country team won the Metro South Championship in 2016 and had top three finishes in 2015, 2017, and 2018. The Girls Cross Country team had a top three finish in 2018. The Boys Indoor Track & Field team earned top three finishes at the Middle School State Championships in 2017 and 2020. Michalke was also named the Metro South Cross Country coach of the year in 2016 and the Metro South Track & Field coach of the year in 2021. 

In 2021, Coach Michalke was named the Head Coach for Cross Country and Assistant Coach for Track & Field, where he works with the distance runners during the Indoor and Outdoor seasons. In his three seasons as head coach, the Girls cross country team has qualified for the State meet each year. In 2023 the Girls team won the 7A Section 3 meet and went on to finish as Runner-Up at the State meet, marking the highest finish in school history. The Boys team has also qualified for the State meet each year and have finished as high as 4th under his leadership. Both teams have produced multiple All-State runners in Cross Country. On the track, Coach Michalke coached Tristan Teer to a 3200M state championship in 2021 and Avery Cahoon to a 1600M state championship in 2024. The girls 4x800 team (Avery Cahoon, Kinley Harris, Mary Durham, Hadley Turner) won the state championship in 2024, while setting the new 7A state record. In addition, he coached Maci Mills to a top 3 finish in the 800M in 2022 and Avery Cahoon to top 3 in 2023 and 2024. The Girls Track & Field team finished as State Runners Up for the 2021 Indoor season as well as the 2024 Outdoor season. 

Coach Michalke graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and from Southwestern Baptist with a Master's degree in Christian Education. He holds a USATF Level 1 coaches certification. Coach Michalke enjoys running and regularly competes in races from 5K to Ultra. He and his wife, Emily, have four children and reside in Trussville.
