Hewitt-Trussville's Outdoor Track and Field team delivered on the biggest stage, as the Huskies brought home a red map with a runner-up finish in Class 7A on the boys side while the girls team earned a third-place finish at the AHSAA 7A Outdoor State Championships in Gulf Shores, AL this weekend.
From start to finish, the Huskies showed just how deep this team is. The boys consistently piled up points with podium finishes, top-eight placements, and strong relay performances to stay in the title hunt all weekend. When the final scores were posted, Hewitt-Trussville stood as the 7A state runner-up, capping off one of the most complete team efforts of the season and finishing with 103.5 points.
The girls were just as impressive, turning in scoring performances across multiple events to secure a third-place finish in Class 7A with 62 points. Their consistency across the board played a major role in keeping them near the top of the standings.
Individually, it was a weekend full of standout performances.
In the para ambulatory events,
George Merchant earned points in the boys 100m and dominated in the field, taking first in both the discus and shot put, while also claiming first in the javelin.
Caylin Kennemur led the way for the girls, finishing first in the 100m and 200m para ambulatory races and adding another first-place finish in the shot put.
Sarah Thomas also contributed key points in both the 100m and 200m para events.
On the track, the Huskies saw big-time finishes across the board.
Devin Kouanvih captured a state title in the boys 200m, while Demetri Hall Jr. took first in the 300m hurdles. Max Ryan placed third in the 800m, and
Noah Jordan had a strong distance showing with a second-place finish in the 1600m and third in the 3200m, with
John Paul Amari adding a sixth-place finish in the 3200m.
For the girls,
Mary Durham finished second in the 800m and added a fifth-place finish in the 1600m, while
Emmie Goodell placed fourth in the 800m.
Olivia Reese earned a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles.
In the hurdles,
Raphael Boakye-Yiadom placed fourth in the 110m hurdles and later added a third-place finish in the triple jump, while
Daryl Thomas Jr. finished fifth in the 110m hurdles and sixth in the 300m hurdles. Matthew McGuire added a fifth-place finish in the 400m.
In the field events,
Jaliyah Edwards placed second in the discus and third in the shot put, while
Savannah Bullock added a sixth-place finish in the discus.
Ben Reeves cleared his way to a second-place finish in the pole vault, with
Charlie Peacock finishing sixth.
Brooklyn Vandegrift also placed sixth in the girls pole vault.
In the jumps,
Will Phillips finished seventh in the long jump, while
Lia Carter placed eighth on the girls side. The boys triple jump group added major points with Boakye-Yiadom (3rd),
Zion Westry (4th), and
Ethan Ridley (6th).
Relay teams also played a key role in the team standings. The boys 4x100 relay team finished second, while the girls 4x100 placed seventh. The boys 4x800 team earned a third-place finish, and the girls 4x800 relay team captured a state championship with a first-place finish.
By the end of the weekend, the results spoke for themselves— a red map for the boys, a third-place finish for the girls, and a long list of podium finishes, personal bests, and championship performances that showed exactly what this program is capable of.
